Cookeville, TN – The Heart and Vascular Center at Cookeville Regional is presenting a free community seminar about atrial fibrillation on Thursday, April 4 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the CRMC Education Center with Tennessee Heart cardiologist/electrophysiologist Mark Wathen, M.D. as the guest speaker.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart arrhythmia, affecting more than 3 million Americans. People with this condition are at an increased risk of other heart rhythm problems, chronic fatigue, heart failure and – even more importantly – stroke. The American Heart Association recommends aggressive treatment of this heart arrhythmia and there are several options available to treat it.
Dr. Wathen is a recognized leader in cardiac electrophysiology, a sub-specialty of cardiology that deals with the electricity of the heart and treats heart arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or other rhythm disturbances. He came to the Heart & Vascular Center at Cookeville Regional and Tennessee Heart from Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he also served as an associate professor of medicine in the division of cardiology for the teaching hospital. Over the course of his 20 years at Vanderbilt, he served as the director of the electrophysiology laboratory, where he conducted numerous clinical trials and studies.
Dr. Wathen received his medical degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville in 1984. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in Atlanta at Emory University in 1987 and his Fellowship in Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX in 1988 as a clinical and research fellow. He then completed a Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at University Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada in 1992. Dr. Wathen is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases.
The seminar is free but space is limited. Please RSVP today by calling 931-783-2030 to reserve a seat.
