CROSSVILLE – Cumberland Medical Center recently donated a used phacoemulsification unit to the World Cataract Foundation through its volunteer physician, Dr. Stewart Galloway. Dr. Galloway has participated in mission work through this organization for the last 13 years. It is anticipated that the equipment will be used to perform cataract surgery in Ometepec, Guerrero, Mexico, a remote area in the poorest state in Mexico where healthcare needs are vastly underserved. According to its website, the focus of the World Cataract Foundation is helping the world to see by eliminating cataract blindness especially in developing parts of the world through surgery, training and equipping.
Ed Anderson, CMC’s CEO, said, “CMC is proud to donate this equipment to an organization committed to serving others through its mission work.”
Dr. Galloway expressed his appreciation to the hospital, “I am humbled each time I have the opportunity to serve on the mission field and provide healthcare in one of the poorest areas in the world. CMC’s donation of the used phaco machine will advance the mission of the WCF and our work in this remote area.”
